Bluetongue virus spreads in Germany

An outbreak of bluetongue virus serotype 8 (BTV-8) has been reported in the Fulda region of the German state of Hesse. As a result, the entire state has been designated as a surveillance area.
The cattle at the affected farm showed symptoms of bluetongue and died shortly after a blood sample was taken.

BTV-8 vaccine available in the Netherlands
At the end of last year, following earlier cases in southern Germany, BTV-8 was also detected in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The surveillance zone established at the time also covered part of the province of Limburg in the Netherlands. A vaccination recommendation against serotypes 3, 4, and 8 applies throughout Germany.
For the Netherlands, a vaccination recommendation also applies this year for animals that have not been vaccinated previously or have not experienced an infection with BTV-3.
In consultation with the veterinarian, livestock farmers may choose to also vaccinate against BTV-8. A registered vaccine for this is available on the market.
