Training on sheep farming adapted to climate change

Extensive farming and signs of breed degeneration have affected the development potential of sheep farming.

The Ninh Thuan Agricultural Extension Center, in collaboration with the Bac Son Commune People’s Committee (Thuan Bac District), recently organized a training course on climate-adaptive sheep breeding techniques for 10 local sheep farming households.

This activity is part of the project “Building a model of climate-adaptive reproductive sheep farming in the South Central Coastal region,” under the National Agricultural Extension Project, implemented from 2024 to 2026 in Ninh Thuan.

Ninh Thuan, a South Central Coastal province, has the largest sheep population in the country. However, with the current climate change situation, extensive farming methods and signs of breed degeneration have affected the development potential of the local sheep farming industry. In 2024, Bac Son Commune (Thuan Bac District) was selected to implement the model with a scale of 105 sheep (Dopper hybrid breed, including 100 females and 5 males) across 5 households receiving support.

During the training course, technical staff from the Ninh Thuan Agricultural Extension Center instructed the farmers on how to select breeds and provided knowledge and techniques for caring, nurturing, and preventing common diseases in high-yield hybrid sheep, to prepare well for breeding selection and care after receiving support.
